understanding (as I’ve been told) is that it’s not a critical issue until you get to the point where the smoke persists. Oil is leaking across the seal(s) and pooling up in the turbo housing, and burns off as the engine gets hot. Once burned off, all is clean - although I’m sure an unnoticeable amount is still being burned, just harder or impossible to see. Turbo replacement is the remedy… or CHRA replacement. Rebuilding the turbos doesn’t often seem to be the best route. Like I said, I’m in the same situation, but I’m holding off on replacing them just yet.
